Most of the world’s volcanoes that pose a risk to humans already have detailed maps of their interiors, but not Popocatépetl in Mexico. Some 25 million people live within a 62-mile (100-kilometer) radius. Schools, hospitals and five airports could be affected by an eruption. After five years of compiling and analyzing seismic data, a group of scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico has created the first 3D map of the whole interior of El Popo.
